Demand Management and Water Reallocation Until relatively recently, the preferred approach to satisfying the water needs of growing communities has been to develop untapped supplies. As new water-supply sources have become less accessible, and as developing them has become more expensive and less acceptable environmentally, managing demand and enabling voluntary water reallocation have taken on increasing importance. Demand management and water marketing could be very important in coping with climate change, both because they promote efficiency and because they enable a considerable amount of flexibility in water resource management.

Design for Environment Research Group A group of engineers and designers who are committed to environmentally-conscious design and manufacture of products. Their main objective is to develop practical methods which designers can use to reduce the environmental impact of manufactured products. They are also are actively involved in the technical and economic issues arising from the growing interest in product stewardship.

Design Strategies: Equipment Efficiencies The design of an energy conserving building requires the coordinated effort of an experienced, competent design team. The architect should clearly communicate goals regarding energy efficiency to the mechanical and electrical engineers early in the design process. Before schematic design begins, the project team should discuss the most reasonable energy conservation strategies relative to the project's scope and budget. The architect should monitor the engineer's equipment and lighting selections to ensure that promising alternatives have not been overlooked.

E&Co E&Co's mission is to promote developing country energy enterprises that create economically self-sustaining energy projects; use environmentally superior technologies; and produce a more equal distribution of energy, especially to the poor, under what is generally referred to as The New Energy Paradigm. For E&Co, an energy enterprise is a business, organization, community or other entity implementing an agenda to use renewable energy, energy efficiency or clean energy technologies to provide energy services. E&Co's role is to participate in the higher risk, less secured stage of enterprise development with a goal of leveraging funding from more conventional sources.

Earth Engineering Center The need for an interdisciplinary approach towards solving global problems has led Columbia University to create the Global Systems Initiative (GSI). The Earth Engineering Center has been established to provide the engineering component of the university's Global Systems Initiative. The overall objective is to combine the resources of a community of scholars who, under the central guiding theme described above, can cross the conventional boundaries of various disciplines and direct research on critical problems that go beyond the scope of an individual researcher or department.

Earth Pledge Foundation The Earth Pledge Foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization founded in 1991 by businessman and labor mediator Theodore W. Kheel to promote sustainable development.

Earthship Earthships ARE a new approach to sustainable living. Imagine building a house out of discarded tires and aluminum cans. Imagine using environmentally friendly materials and techniques to create a truly self-sufficient home. Imagine interfacing and ha rnessing nature to create a dwelling that lives with the land, not on top of it.

Earth WISE - The Washington State University Sustainable Development Sourcebook Earth WISE consists of a bibliography and selected abstracts of academic writings exploring a range of social and ecological science perspectives on sustainable development. This compilation attempts to integrate the social, cultural, economic and ecological dimensions of sustainability, giving special attention to the human causes of environmental impacts, the social organization of sustainability and the equity of sustainable development.

Ecological Design Institute The Ecological Design Institute and Van der Ryn Architects create innovative design solutions that link nature, culture and technology to reintegrate the needs of human society within the balance of nature.

Ecological Engineering Ecological engineering is: (1) A design discipline and practice that plans constructed ecologies for the benefit of life on this planet . ECOS is the prime operating principle. Ecos definition ; and (2) Ecological designs are sustainable strategies that manifest ecological integrity. Ecological engineering seeks to design and manifest closed-loop processes in order to eliminate waste, just as nature does. The result is efficient and economical systems that make sense.

EcoSystems EcoSystems is dedicated to a sustainable future.Their mission is to develop, promote and market methodologies, technologies, and products that conserve natural resources and advance our planet towards sustainability through the use of solar energy.

Eco-Village Information Service An eco-village is a human scale, full-featured settlement which integrates human activities harmlessly into the natural environment, supports healthy human development, and can be continued into the indefinite future. The Eco-village Information Service features information covering all aspects of Eco-villages; the Social, Infrastructure, Ecological and Spiritual.

ECOVILLAGES - Sustainable Communities EcoSystems is planning, developing and marketing a network of environmentally sound, affordable and sustainable communities. Sustainability means "a continuing process of economic and social development, in both developing and industrialized nations, that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." [Global Tomorrow Coalition]

Energy House Energy House is an 1890's Victorian-style home on the southwest corner of Bloomfield's historic district. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s Energy House functioned as a rooming house and was rescued in 1995 by the staff of LaRocco Associates, who restored it for themselves and to serve as the U.S. offices of E&Co, IEI, and BUN. True to its name, Energy House houses three non-profit organizations doing work in the field of renewable energy in developing countries. Two for-profit organizations are also housed under the Energy House roof.

Environmental Sustainable Architecture Architecture must look into the future. We can't always get it right of course, but we can use "open channel" architecture to make it easy to add new, even unforeseen technology, and handle climate changes decades down the road. A house built to 1995 standards is obsolete before it is finished - how will it protect and comfort its occupants in 2025? Housebuilding, now an archaic laborious task at best, needs to be taken into the Twenty-First century and looked at by the ecologist, scientist, architect and engineer on a clean sheet of paper. The basic goal of Environmental Architecture is simple: attractive, comfortable, affordable shelter that does no harm to the Earth in its manufacture, or its use.

Envisioning a Sustainable Future As we look deeply into the question of how to make a better world, every direction leads to one essential fact: most of our current activities are not sustainable. In spite of the laudable efforts for conservation, recycling, and forms of socially responsible business, the end result falls far short of sustainability. In our current market dynamics and resource utilization, we are, by definition, seeing to our own demise. Our global transition to sustainability will have to be fundamental and profound, and undoubtedly a little painful. For most citizens of the world--and particularly for those in first world countries--it will mean tangible changes for every single one of us. The sooner we act, however, the less painful it will be.
