ABB Hybrid Systems AB For some years now ABB has been involved in the development and production of electrotechnical components and systems for hybrid vehicles. So far it has been a question of prototypes, as demonstrated in, for example, Volvos conceptual vehicles. The basis for this work is ABBs competence and resources in respect of the development and manufacturing of electrical machines, power electronics and electrical systems.

Electric And Hybrid Vehicles An overview of the benefits, challenges, and technologies, by Robert Q. Riley. This document explores the benefits and challenges of tomorrow's clean and efficient electric powered automobiles.
Electric and Hybrid Vehicles With more than 40 years of experience in automotive research, Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) offers a unique range of capabilities for electric and hybrid vehicle research and development. The staff has extensive experience in the design, development, and evaluation of vehicle systems and hardware. As a multidisciplinary research and development organization, the Institute provides specialists in modeling, chemistry, combustion, materials, manufacturing, emission control, and systems integration.
Energy Security and Clean Air Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) are almost as clean as EVs and have vehicle performance comparable to that of today's standard internal combustion engine vehicles. More important, such performance appears to be available in the mid-term future (e.g., 2001), and therefore represents a practical, technically-achievable alternative approach. Prudence suggests we develop both EVs and HEVs in parallel, because many of the technical advancements can be shared and because either or both will be needed to achieve efficiency and clean air goals.
First-Ever Hybrid-Electric "Hummer" Unique Mobility, Inc.'s (AMEX:UQM) powerful but compact electric motor and control technology is at the heart of a "hybrid-electric" HMMWV combat vehicle to be unveiled today in Huntsville, Alabama. The ultra-rugged combat vehicle, the first of its kind, boasts twice the acceleration and climbing capability of a conventionally powered "Hummer."
Flywheels in Hybrid Vehicles A rapidly spinning flywheel combines with a gas-turbine engine to power a novel hybrid electric vehicle. Over the past four years, Rosen Motors has been developing a hybrid vehicle that incorporates a rather unusual technology--the flywheel. Although the concept of a flywheel is quite simple, the implementation has been difficult.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) About HEVs
Galileo Research, Inc. Galileo Research, Inc. is a high technology company specializing in electric power generation for Hybrid Electric Vehicles and homeowner/business applications requiring portable backup electric power. The Company has been conducting Research and Development on a new, exciting and innovative powerplant, the High Specific Energy Output Free-Piston Engine-Generator (HISEN-FPEG) that offers significant advantages over other developing technologies such as the Fuel Cell, Gas Turbine Engine, Stirling Engine, Rotary Engine and other traditional electric power generation configurations. Aside from ultra low emissions (due to the type of combustion process used), the HISEN-FPEG shall also offer multifuel capability, small size and light weight. Further, the unit is expected to cost significantly less than any other electric power generation mechanism and possess other advantages such as little or no maintenance. Testing on prototype components has begun almost two years ago. A working model has been built and tested and clearly shows where this technology has a great potential in meeting the demands for low fuel consumption and ultra low emissions.
HEV Auxiliary Power Unit Specialists - University of Idaho Objective: Test and monitor the current interaction between the auxiliary power unit (APU) and the hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) power electronics unit and battery pack. Based on these results, improve the performance of the APU. This primarily involves increasing the power that the APU can supply when the battery pack is at a high state of charge. Also, improve the cold start of the Kohler engine.
HEV Emission Control Automotive emissions are a major contributor to urban air quality problems. HEVs can reduce this contribution significantly through increased fuel economy, use of alternative fuels, and improved power unit and aftertreatment technology. The following provides an overview of each major fuel types potential for pollution formation, and a discussion of power unit and aftertreatment effects.
Hybrid Electric Vehicle Component Information
Hybrid Electric Vehicle - Cornell University Hybrid electric vehicles represent a practical solution today. They can run many times more efficient than internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles while performing to similar levels. Hybrid electric vehicles simultaneously promote the development of technologies critical to electric vehicles and the improved efficiency and performance of internal combustion vehicles.

Hybrid Electric Vehicle Program - Simulation Background Information/Calculations for HEV ADVISOR. ADVISOR approximates the continuous behavior of a vehicle as a series of discrete steps during each of which the components are assumed to be at steady state. That is, at each time step, the effects of changing current, voltage, torque, and RPM are neglected. This allows efficiency tables, which are generated by testing a drivetrain component at a fixed torque and RPM (and current and voltage, if applicable), to be used to relate the power demands of the components at each time step.
