I urge you to join them in the quest to protect the natural world. By supporting the Friends of the Environment Foundation you are preserving the place you call home.

Fueling Global Warming - Federal Subsidies to Oil in the United States Despite increasing concerns over climate change and other environmental consequences of our heavy reliance on oil, the U.S. government continues to subsidize the fuel. Subsidies to oil are provided to producers, transporters, and consumers in varied and often subtle ways. These subsidies not only cost taxpayers billions of dollars per year, but they often exacerbate environmental damage. They can also reduce oil prices, suppressing market signals to governments, oil consumers, and oil producers to begin shifting to alternatives.

GCCIP On-Line Fact Sheet Series The Global Climate Change Information Programme has established a comprehensive series of essays dealing with the issues of contemporary climate change and global warming.

Global Change Data and Information System (GCDIS) GCDIS is a collection of distributed information systems operated by government agencies involved in global change research. GCDIS provides global change data to scientists and researchers, policy makers, educators, industry, and the public at large. GCDIS includes multidisciplinary data from atmospheric science, ecology, oceanography, as well as economics and sociology. GCDIS is a cooperative activity of agencies participating in the U.S. Global Change Research Program (USGCRP). For more information about GCDIS, see the GCDIS Organizational Information page.

Global Climate Change The World Bank Group has recently embarked on a review of issues and options relating to energy and the environment. Global Environmental Options Founded in 1994, GEO is a 501(c)(3) non-profit tax exempt organization which seeks to restore a balance between the built and natural environment. Driven by the reality that buildings are responsible for the consumption of up to 40% of the planet's resources and create over 30% of global warming gases, GEO was created to bring attention to the impact that buildings and planning have on the environment and biodiversity. To reduce these impacts, GEO develops integrated high performance green building strategies for professionals and other decision makers world-wide, coordinating hands-on building and planning projects that showcase green design.

Global Warming - Dateline Kyoto From December 1st through 11th, 1997, a team of NRDC global warming, energy and environmental policy experts attended the global warming treaty conference in Kyoto, Japan. The conference -- which was scheduled to end on the 10th, but continued on through that night and into the following day -- produced a landmark accord, with industrialized countries agreeing for the first time to legally-binding limits on greenhouse gas emissions. Below, an inside glimpse into daily events at the conference.

Global Warming: Leading to the Economics of Hurricanes This paper presents a cost-benefit analysis of global warming and its economic effects on specific areas of concern, namely, agriculture, forestry, and sea-level rise. From this, there are many costly side effects that need to be addressed. Hurricanes, being one of those effects, are costly to the environment and to life itself. Hurricane Marilyn will be focused on to show these costs and to supplement the argument that action needs to be taken now in order to avoid greater costs in the future.
