Climate Protection Initiative (CPI) WRI's Climate Protection Initiative (CPI) is an institute-wide effort motivated by our view that there is a positive link between climate protection and a sound economy. Wider recognition of this linkage is essential for bringing about the large scale technological, economic, and political changes needed over the next several years to halt the build-up of greenhouse gases. Through CPI, WRI is reaching out to the business community to form partnerships to identify "safe climate-sound business" government policies and corporate strategies.

Communities for a Better Environment -California (CBE) Communities for a Better Environment -California (CBE) is a non-profit, statewide, multiracial, urban environmental health and justice organization that works with urban communities and grassroots organizations--using science based research, legal tactics, and organizing strategies to prevent air and water pollution, eliminate toxic hazards, and improve public health. CBE's long-term goals are to develop an environmentally sustainable manufacturing base, minimize the use of toxins, expand pollution prevention strategies, and involve those people most at risk by industrial pollution in decisions that impact their lives and their communities.

Conservation International (CI) Conservation International (CI) is a field-based, non-profit organization that protects the Earth's biologically richest areas and helps the people who live there improve their quality of life. CI uses science, economics, policy, and community involvement to promote biodiversity conservation in tropical rain forests and other endangered ecosystems worldwide. Through CI's environmentally sensitive and economically sound approach, resource protection is good business for everyone.

Content Label Alberta Electricity Grid This page shows the sources of electricity in Alberta, and the emissions associated with these sources. This 'content label' is similar to that for foods in that it is intended to assist customer choice, in this case for electricity products. By providing clear and accurate data, electricity consumers who are concerned about sustainable development, environmental issues and air pollution can see the impacts of various electricity source options.

DOE Selects Potential Breakthrough Approaches For Removing Greenhouse Gases from Ecosystem The Department of Energy (DOE) has selected an initial group of research projects to pursue a goal that could ultimately determine the long-range future of global fossil fuel use -- the inexpensive capture and permanent disposal of greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming. These cutting-edge research projects range from the use of carbon dioxide absorbing algae to deep-ocean greenhouse gas disposal.

Dirty Little Secrets Through powerful lobbying, polluters have carved out special treatment in the tax code. What they do is not illegal, but it is unfair. It is also a disaster for the environment and human health. Dirty Little Secrets offers constructive public policy analysis and recommendations. It exposes 15 of the tax code's most unfair tax breaks and giveaways at a time when the government is searching for money.

Energy and Environmental Space This briefing is one of a series of summaries based on work in Friends of the Earth's publication Tomorrow's World. The book sets out quantified targets for what is needed to achieve sustainable development, based on two principles - that we should stay within environmental limits, and that everyone has a right to a share of the Earth's resources. Keeping to these principles will require the UK to cut its use of a wide range of resources. This briefing looks at our use of energy.

Energy Consumption and the Environment:  Impacts and Options for Personal Transportation  In 1973, petroleum shortages caused by the OPEC oil embargo launched the world's industrialized nations on a search for more efficient homes, factories, and transportation systems. After two decades of attempts to economize, energy use in the residential sector is about the same, industrial energy use is down, and transportation energy use is up. Today, we are more concerned with the other side of the coin - the environmental problems and long-term economic perils of unbridled energy consumption.
