The Texas LoanSTAR Program The LoanSTAR program is Texas' own program designed to "Save Taxes And Resources" by monitoring energy use and recommending energy-saving retrofits. In 1988, the Texas Governor's Energy Office (now known as the State Energy Conservation Office) received approval from the U. S. Department of Energy to establish a statewide retrofit demonstration program. The initial capital came from oil overcharge funds. The LoanSTAR program is designed to demonstrate commercially available, energy efficient, retrofit technologies and techniques. Part of the approved DOE program includes monitoring the buildings to determine the effectiveness of the conservation retrofits.
The WSU Building Standards and Science Program The WSU Building Standards and Science Program provides technical support so the energy and cost benefits of these standards are achieved. Washington State has some of the most progressive, energy-efficient and ventilation construction standards in the United States. These standards include building codes, which apply to all new and remodeled residential and commercial construction in the state, and voluntary construction standards for manufactured housing.
The Zero Energy Building Project In this project, they are designing a typical commercial office building with advanced energy conservation features. Their goal is to design a building with a comfortable working environment which consumes minimal energy from the utilities. They accomplish this with an innovative daylighting design using a specular light shelf to carry the light to the rear portion of the rooms, active and passive solar systems to heat the building and service hot water, evaporative cooling to meet the large cooling load typical of commercial buildings, and solar photovoltaics to supply electrical power.
Total Efficiency Network The Total Efficiency Network (TEN) provides the information, training, and support necessary to save money and resources through efficient resource management at large public and private facilities. Building on the success of resource conservation programs begun in the early 1990s in the northwest, TEN offers the latest techniques for large facilities to employ a Resource Efficiency Manager (REM). The REM develops a resource awareness program that pays for the position and creates additional income through savings generated by efficient resource management. This unique program allows facilities the assurance that energy and resource reduction mandates will continue to be met, even through times of tough budget cuts or realignment.

University of Florida Industrial Assessment Center The University of Florida Industrial Assessment Center (aka Energy Analysis and Diagnostic Center) facilitates productivity improvements of small and medium-sized manufacturing facilities in Florida and South Georgia through increased energy efficiency, waste minimization and operations efficiency.
Urban Heat Island It has been known for some time that cities are generally warmer than the surrounding, more rural areas. Because of this relative warmth, a city may be referred to as an urban heat island. The reason the city is warmer than the country comes down to a difference between the energy gains and losses of each region.
