Electric Vehicles Electric vehicles are gaining attention as an option for improving air quality and lessening United States dependence on imported oil. Research and development is under way on advanced battery and fuel cell technology and automakers are stepping up efforts to design electric vehicles for fleets and personal use. While today's technology is new, battery-powered vehicles have been around for a long time. Electrics flourished before the rise of the gasoline automobile and some 50,000 electric vehicles were in use in the United States by 1912. How Clean are Electric Vehicles? Electric vehicles are sometimes referred to as "zero-emission vehicles" because they produce essentially no pollution from the tailpipe or through fuel evaporation. This is important, for it means that the use of electric vehicles could greatly reduce emissions of carbon monoxide and smog-forming pollutants in cities with dirty air.
Electric Vehicles Electric Vehicles (EVs) will put Los Angeles on the road to cleaner air. Electric vehicles can meet the needs of LA commuters, and make owning a car easier. Los Angeles is "charged up" about the future ... a future with convenient, economical, clean-fueled electric vehicles.
Electric Vehicles Gear Up Battery range, cost, and life limitations are gradually being overcome. W ithin just a few years, state mandates will put thousands of electric vehicles on American roads in an effort to curb urban pollution. Government officials, car companies, and suppliers of the batteries that power electric vehicles are hashing out the dates and quotas that will govern their marketing. And they are involved in extensive and expensive research to meet these looming deadlines.
Electric Vehicles Northwest, Inc. EVsNW is organized upon co-operative principles with the emphasis on light EVs, such as bicycle power assist units, electric bicycles, the "ElectriCity" Geo Metro conversion design and "kit", the Swiss TWIKE - and later in '98 two-wheeled motorcycles and scooters.
Electric Vehicle Total Energy Cycle Assessment Identifies Potential Environmental Problems Electric vehicles (EVs) help reduce oil imports and, potentially, greenhouse gas emissions, as well as improve air quality. But, EVs are only one of several technologies that do so. Total energy cycle analyses can be used to compare, from a complete system perspective, the environmental emissions, residuals, and total energy use of competing methods of providing energy services for similar end uses. Such a comparison will make it possible to select the best means of reducing U.S. oil imports, greenhouse gas emissions, and air pollution without causing unintended impacts on the environment.
Electrified Motors Sports Electrified Motors Sports, of Laveen, Arizona is home of Dennis "Kilowatt" Berube's world record holding battery powered electric dragster, "Current Eliminator II." Four-Year Report on Battery-Electric Transit Vehicle Operation at The Santa Barbara Metropolitan Transit District The Santa Barbara Metropolitan Transit District (MTD) introduced batteryelectric transit vehicles into regular service in January of 1991. This novel application of electric propulsion ensured quiet, exhaustfree, odorless operation, and proved to be an immediate success with riders, as evidenced by a tenfold increase in ridership during the first year of allelectric operation (from 100,000 passengers per year to 1,000,000 passengers per year). During the ensuing four years, MTD has logged more than 300,000 miles and 60,000 hours of service on its batteryelectric fleet, and has carried more than 3 million passengers during the course of 8,000 driving cycles.
Freeway Worthy Electric Vehicle Project The Pickup and Pickup II are purpose-built, two passenger, utility vehicles engineered to transport materials, goods, products, service personnel, and support equipment to enhance the Air Force mission. The Pickup II utilizes advanced technologies in electric drivetrains, battery storage and management systems, structural materials, and vehicle manufacturing techniques. The vehicle is equipped with all the modern vehicle features including front wheel drive, integrated heating and air conditioning, advanced internally heated windshield, AM/FM stereo with cassette and removable face, remote keyless entry, glove box, power windows, power door locks, bucket seats, and an adjustable telescoping and tilting steering wheel column. Enlarged crush zones and modular safety bumpers meet DOT safety standards.
Frequently Asked Questions about Transportation
Green Vehicles of the Future It used to be that green was a new car or truck's color, but the word now symbolizes a vehicle that has little or no pollution and makes maximum use of the energy it consumes. "Green" now equates to clean. All the major and minor members of the vehicle producing community are involved, from the Big Three's Partnership for a New Generation of Vehicles (PNVG) in which Ford, GM and Chrysler share high-mileage technology, down to the electric bicycle that former auto-icon Lee Iacocca is developing. Over the months, we've compiled a file on "green machines" and these are the ones that are most note-worthy.

How a Fuel Cell Powers a Car The electrochemical reactions of a fuel cell begin when hydrogen enters one side of the fuel cell, where it is separated into an electron and a hydrogen ion. In the case of one type of fuel cell, a proton-exhange membrane, the ions move through a membrane to combine with oxygen on the other side, thus making water. Meanwhile, since electrons cannot pass through the membrane, they are forced to take an external route that carries them through an electric motor. Passing through the motor, the electrons transfer power from the fuel cell to the motor. The motor, in turn, drives the wheels of the car.
Hydrogen-Fueled Bus Joins Georgia Fleet A coalition of academic, government and private industry partners has built a prototype hydrogen-fueled, electric-powered transit bus that produces near-zero emissions. The H2Fuel Bus is the first vehicle to feature this unique hybrid power system, which uses hydrogen fuel stored in metal hydrides. It was delivered to Georgia's Augusta-Richmond County Public Transit in late April, where it will be used as part of regular operations for one year.

They are intended to be a lower cost, environmentally friendly alternative to larger gasoline automobiles and traditional utility vehicles.
Nissan Altra EV Every so often, a vehicle comes along that stirs the imagination. One that may appear evolutionary, but in its detail advances the status quo by such great leaps that, in retrospect, it will be credited with pushing the boundaries of design and technology. The original Datsun 510 was just such a vehicle, as were the 240Z, King Cab Truck, Maxima, 300ZX and others that followed. Now, Nissan proudly presents the Altra EV - the revolutionary new lithium-ion battery powered vehicle that may change how the world view electric vehicles. The Nissan Altra EV will be available to a select number of demonstration fleet users in California in 1998 and 1999, with consumer availability planned for 2000.
