All Systems Go for Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicles The waiting is over. We have the technology to power electric vehicles with hydrogen fuel cells, according to a report issued Wednesday by an environmental research organization.
Alternative Energy Vehicle Program Clean energy sources are available for environmentally friendly transportation. If we are to sustain our children's future, we must develop alternative energy vehicles and educate the public on their capabilities. Florida Solar Energy Center (FSEC) is conducting research, development, testing, education, and technology transfer programs in the area of alternative energy transportation technology.
Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC) The AFDC is operated by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) with funding and direction from the Office of Alternative Fuels within the Office of Transportation Technologies (OTT) at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The AFDC collects operating information from vehicles (in programs sponsored by the Alternative Motor Fuels Act) running on alternative fuels, analyzes those data, and makes them available to the public. The AFDC also maintains information on research reports conducted for both the Biofuels Systems Division and the Fuel Utilization Data and Analysis Division of the DOE Office of Alternative Fuels.
Automobile Emissions: An Overview Emissions from an individual car are generally low, relative to the smokestack image many people associate with air pollution. But in numerous cities across the country, the personal automobile is the single greatest polluter, as emissions from millions of vehicles on the road add up. Driving a private car is probably a typical citizen's most "polluting" daily activity.
Be Practical When Considering Alternative Fuels Environmental concerns, fuelled by financial tax penalties, are leading to an increasing interest among companies in alternative fuel (AF) vehicles. This is a welcome development that is, in many ways, being instigated by fleet operators and manufacturers. However, practical motoring considerations, just as when the industry switched to unleaded fuel 10 years ago, should apply the brake to any headlong rush in this direction.
Bicycle Motor Kits/Electric Bicycles A tabulated listing and description of various bicycle motor kits and electric bicycles, with links to some manufacturers.
Big Three Committed to Fuel Cell Vehicles With the announcement by General Motors Chairman John Smith that the auto giant will have a "production ready" fuel-cell vehicle by 2004, there are now public commitments by the big three American auto makers to produce the environmentally-friendly cars.
Can Electric Cars Help Me Breathe Easier? The push for electric cars grew out of persistent air pollution in the Los Angeles basin, which lead California's erstwhile plan to require that 2% of new vehicles sold in 1998 be "zero-emissions vehicles." (That proportion is still supposed to rise to 10% by year 2003.) In addition, several Northeast states signed on to the California standards, enlarging the market push for e-cars.
Cars and Their Environmental Impact Air pollution is expected to soon outpace the environmental gains made by emission control efforts. Reducing the future environmental impacts of motor vehicles will depend heavily on reducing gas consumption. Government policies and legislation, car owners and drivers, and new developments in fuels and cars can reduce gas consumption by decreasing the total vehicle miles driven and by increasing the energy efficiency of the vehicles driven.

AeroVironment is a leader in electric vehicle technology as the designer and builder of the solar powered GM Sunraycer and the GM Impact electric car demonstrator. The GT and AeroVironment engineering team have combined to design the Charger Electric Bicycle Drivetrain as a completely integrated, purpose-built, high performance electric bicycle power amplifier.
Cleaner than Clean What's less polluting than "zero emission vehicles"? Supercars. When technology takes a leap forward, it can catch regulators on the hop. That's what's happened in California recently, as the advent of supercars--ultralight, hybrid fuel/electric vehicles capable of getting hundreds of miles per gallon--has forced a major rethink of air-quality regulations that were considered state-of-the-art just four years ago.
Darwin Motors San Francisco's exclusive Sparrow electric car dealership. Engineered from the ground up as a supplemental commuter vehicle to fill this exact need. Its highly efficient design enables it to provide extremely cost effective transportation for as little as a penny per mile. Its small size makes it extremely nimble, simple to park and will help alleviate traffic congestion in large metropolitan areas. Priced at $12,900 the Sparrow is the first ZEV (Zero Emissions Vehicle) to offer a cost effective solution for daily riders.
DOE/Industry Competitions Advance Alternative-Fueled Automotive Technologies Since 1987, the DOE has sponsored 28 different college and high school engineering competitions through Argonne National Laboratory. These competitions help to accelerate the domestic development of alternative-fuel-vehicle technology. Federal funding for the competitions is heavily leveraged by industry contributions, reflecting the high value industry places on the competitions. These competitions emphasize current or future vehicle technology; students work with production vehicles (donated by domestic vehicle manufacturers) to meet emissions standards, while maintaining high performance and fuel economy. Auto industry experts judge events, interact with students, and compare technologies. The competitions program represents a unique international coalition of government and industry aimed at eliminating technical and institutional barriers to acceptance of alternative fuels.
Driving Out Pollution: The Benefits of Electric Vehicles Stationary sources, such as industrial and commercial facilities, have historically borne the greatest share of pollution-reduction costs required to comply with health-based environmental standards. These sources have traditionally been relatively easy to control and monitor. Yet mobile sources, primarily cars and trucks, are contributing close to half of all urban air pollution. Since vehicle usage (based on vehicle-miles of travel) is forecast to grow 2 percent annually in California, air quality standards in the state, and particularly in the South Coast Air Basin, will not be met unless cars become much cleaner.

Electric Bicycle (EMB) The EMB concept is a very simple one. A motor, a set of batteries and a throttle are mated to a mountain bike frame. The pedals, all original gears and derailleurs need to be stripped from the mountain bike. The motor is added and linked to the rear wheel using a heavy duty chain and a large gear on the rear wheel to reduce the motor's speed. The motor is hooked to a throttling mechanism, which controls the amount of power flowing to the motor. The throttling mechanism is then hooked to the batteries.
Electric Bicycles, Scooters and Motorcycles Electric bicycle, moped, scooter and motorcycle producers seem to appear and disappear more frequently than the producers of larger vehicles, probably because start-up costs are relatively low, but market penetration is difficult, especially in North America for such vehicles. Therefore, this page will probably be out of date even before it is published. Any additions, corrections and contributions are always welcome .
Electric Bikes and Power Systems: Overview of Products Electric bicycles are thoroughly practical, both for personal transit and transporting moderate loads. Factors such as improved batteries, worsening traffic congestion, and new bicycle infrastructure (bike lanes, bike racks, secure parking, etc.) are attracting users. To meet the demand, various manufacturers are developing electric bikes. Here we present an overview of industry offerings which we classify by availability - past, present, and future. Note that many in the "future" category already exist but are unavailable in the U.S. This page also offers information on electric scooters, gas-powered bicycles, and the premier example of a PTV - The Sparrow.
Electric Fuel Co. Electric Fuel develops, produces and commercializes zinc-air energy systems for powering electric vehicles.
